La poblacion del norte Chico en el siglo XVIII : crecimiento y cambios en una region minero de Chile
This research examines three aspects of the population of Norto Chico (Chile), in the 18th century growth and subregional redistribution of laboral structure and life conditions in urban and rural areas. It also includes a first chapter about the Chilean population in the 18th century. The population of Norte Chico, a mining agrarian zone with included the old corrogimientos of Copiapo, Coquimbo and Quillota (present provinces of Atacama, Coquimbo and the northern part of Aooncagua), experienced between 17A4 and 1835 an interesting growth. The region suffered during the last colonial century, a great demand of its mining production, which seems to be the starting point of the growth of the population already mentioned. Since that moment it is possible to follow its evolution through certain small territorial unities: the "curatos" (territories subject to the religious administration of a priest). This fact also makes it possible to examine its internal redistribution. The growth of population took place together with a consolidation of so-called typical forms of dependence, in particular of "peonaje". That is, al least, the impression which gives a thorough examination of the situation of de "corregimiento" of Coquimbo, the best know by the documents studied in this research. The comparison between urban and rural areas, tries to show the life conditions of the population of this zone. In general, it may be held that the ruling groups organized their life in the former, whereas the exploited were concentrated in the latter. There were, thus, two worlds whose differences also show the differences wich existed in the regional society.
