The Catholic Apostolic Eucharist
The Catholic Apostolic Eucharist
In spite of several works on the Catholic Apostolic Church, no study has yet appeared on its Liturgy, in particular, the Eucharistic Office. This thesis sets out to fill this gap, and it divides into three parts: Introduction, Commentary and Assessment. In the Introduction, previous works on the Church by non-members and the liturgical and historical evidence by officials in the Church are described. Then follows a history of the Church, with particular emphasis on the evolution of its Ministry. Next comes a description of the development of its Eucharistic worship, based on the early documents of the Church, and the successive editions of its service-book. After this, a short introduction is given to the setting of the Rite - including the architecture, the personnel, and the vestments. The Commentary centres on the Rite of the Eucharist, together with its Propria - Seasonal and Occasional. Forms. Each of these is preceded by a short introductory chapter, explaining terminology, and, in the case of the Propria, outlining the evolution and features of the component parts. In the three Commentary chapters, each component part is subjected to a detailed examination, for its date, variations with early editions, numerous suggested liturgical sources and parallels, content and ceremonial.ii. The Assessment sets out to look at the Rite synthetically, from different stared-points. A specifically liturgical chapter explains its special features, in language, the many sources, possible methods of composition, and its performance. Next, doctrinal features are investigated, both common and special, as they occur in the Rite itself. Then, a historical comparison is made, for common ground as well as contrasts, in the preceding century, at the time, and in the period since. Finally, the most important aspects of the Rite are drawn together, to show that it is one of the most interesting Liturgies of recent times.
