Faccombe Netherton : Archaeological and historical research

This is a report on the excavation and associated research on a manorial site at Faccombe Netherton, a shrunken village in north west Hampshire. Faccombe was owned by Wynflaed apparently the grandmother of Kings Edwy and Edgar in the lOth century and later by wealthy Norman families. In the mid 14th century part of the estate was sold, the manorial site was later abandoned and the original village of Faccombe declined in favour of a newer settlement in the centre of the manor. The manor is well documented, particularly from the 14th century. There was some slight evidence of occupation in prehistoric and Roman times but the first settled occupation found of excavation was in the 9th century in an area of early fields on the west side of the valley. A series of'buildings interpreted as halls, private apartments and kitchens developed from the 9th century, through to the mid 14th century. There was evidence of bronze and gold metalworking in the late'lOth century. The early field boundaries were developed into enclosures at around 1000 and had a chequered history. The report contains a description and discussion of the local topography and development of the landscape, the chronological development of the site, detailed description and discussion of the buildings, manorial enclosures, metal working evidence, building materials, pottery, metal objects including Saxon and medieval coins, and other objects of stone. The site was not completely excavated and has subsequently been The finds and archaeological scheduled as an ancient monument. records will be deposited in the British Museum.
