Studies of reciprocal interspecific hybridizations between Phaseolus coccineus L. and Phaseolus vulgaris L.

Studies of reciprocal interspecific hybridizations between Phaseolus coccineus L. and Phaseolus vulgaris L.
Studies of reciprocal interspecific hybridizations between Phaseolus coccineus L. and Phaseolus vulgaris L.

The largest of the three gene pools in cultivated American species of Phaseolus involves the important cultigens Ph. vulgaris and Ph. coccineus together with two minor forms, Ph. polyanthus (Ph. dumoaue), and Ph. harmsianus. The nature of the isolating barriers between Ph. vulgaria and Ph. coccineus were investigated and it was confirmed that differences in the cross-compatibility of reciprocal interspecific crosses were determined by the cytoplasm (plasmon). Viability of F1 hybrid plants made on Ph. coccineus was lower than that of the reciprocals produced on,Ph. vulgaria. Fertility of the surviving (Ph. coccineus x Ph. vulgaris) F1 hybrid was higher than those of their reciprocals. It was concluded that cytoplasmic factors reduce gametophytic viability of interspecific hybrids produced on Ph. vulgaria but that of the sporophyte in reciprocal crosses. Differences in the segregation patterns of reciprocal F2 progenies were observed in some instances. Some inconsistencies were also observed in broad sense heritabilities of particular characters segregating in reciprocal F2 progenies but fore marked discrepancies were found in narrow sense' heritability values. The determinations of the number of effective factors controlling qualitative characters showed inconsistencies in reciprocal crosses but the differences were again most marked for the quantitative characters. Correlation coefficients were obtained for quantitative,x quantitative, quantitative x qualitative, and qualitative x qualitative characters. The higher levels of apparent correlation were found between quantitative characters. It is suggested that the highest consistent correlationa indicate pleiotropy, lower correlations could be indicative of linkage while inconsistencies between correlations between-the same characters calculated from reciprocal progenies could arise from distorted segregation patterns.
