McHale, Tara Kate (1996) Communitarianism : from method to advocacy. University of Southampton, Doctoral Thesis.
Abstract
It is the central contention of this thesis that a 'liberal communitarian' approach is better equipped to usher in liberal justice than alternatives and rivals.
In order to establish the truth of the contention, 'Liberalism' is defined and a communitarian method is constructed, distinguished, metaphilosophically grounded and defended. That method is applied to liberalism to produce a 'liberal communitarian' approach. The reconceptualisations of tenets of liberal theory and the implications for liberal practice implied by that application produce a structure in which a just liberal society, defined as such from a considered and coherent liberal perspective, might be realised through the efforts of motivated liberals.
