Simultaneous measurement of circular dichroism and optical rotatory dispersion

Simultaneous measurement of circular dichroism and optical rotatory dispersion
Simultaneous measurement of circular dichroism and optical rotatory dispersion

Optical rotatory dispersion (ORD) and circular dichroism (CD) are physicochemical effects which may be utilised in the field of stereochemical studies. Valuable structural information about optically active compounds can be obtained from measurements of both or either of these phenomena. Reliable relationships are obtained if the two effects are measured simultaneously using one instrument. An instrument, previously designed and constructed to measure and record ORD and CD simultaneously in the visible region of the spectrum has been calibrated and its performance examined and perfected. The spectral range of the instrument has been extended into the ultra-violet region. Simultaneous recording of ORD and CD spectra in addition to curves showing optical rotation against circular dichroism are presented fora number of different compounds. ORD and CD spectra have not previously been recorded for some of these. A relationship between optical rotation and circular dichroism has been established and verified experimentally.
