A reconstruction and measurement of landscape change : a study of six parishes in the St Albans area
A reconstruction and measurement of landscape change : a study of six parishes in the St Albans area
This work is concerned with two principal themes. Firstly, of cartographic reconstruction and, secondly, of quantifying change in the landscape. The purpose of quantification is to provide some objective means of comparing change in different periods. These questions are explored in relation to an area of 126 km sq around the city of St Albans, Hertfordshire.
The first chapter consists of a general introduction to the question of landscape studies in relation to archaeology and historical geography. The second chapter is based almost entirely on physical evidence, (the archaeology), up to the mid-Saxon period. Chapters 3 and 4, in contrast, are based mainly, though not exclusively, on documentary sources from the late-Saxon period to the mid 19th century. The fifth chapter is concerned with quantifying the changing patterns of the different landscape components up to the late 20th century. The purpose of which is to enable a better understanding of the processes that have moulded the present landscape. The final chapter is concerned with the methodology of reconstruction and the evaluation of landscape as a means of managing a finite resource.

Abstract
This work is concerned with two principal themes. Firstly, of cartographic reconstruction and, secondly, of quantifying change in the landscape. The purpose of quantification is to provide some objective means of comparing change in different periods. These questions are explored in relation to an area of 126 km sq around the city of St Albans, Hertfordshire.
The first chapter consists of a general introduction to the question of landscape studies in relation to archaeology and historical geography. The second chapter is based almost entirely on physical evidence, (the archaeology), up to the mid-Saxon period.
