Rempi spectroscopic studies of some small molecules in the gas-phase
Rempi spectroscopic studies of some small molecules in the gas-phase
The work presented in this thesis is concerned with the REMPI spectroscopic detection of small, unstable molecules in the gas-phase. The design and construction of a laser MPI ion current spectrometer with mass resolution to facilitate this is described.
The experiments performed concentrate on first and second row unstable diatomic molecules containing sulphur, produced by a microwave discharge of a flowing gas mixture. In particular, several valence and Rydbcrg states of the molecules SO(X3£-), NS(X2n), CSCX'S+J and S2(X:r£-/i,) have been observed and characterised, many for the firsl lime, using the technique of REMPI spectroscopy. The characterisation of each transition has been achieved by a variety of methods including; recording spectra with different photon orders, laser polarisation dependence studies, the identification and measurement of vibrational series, rotational analysis and spectral simulations. Suggestions for future work are made, including the construction of an MPI photoclcctron spectrometer.
