Samadian, Vahab (1986) Magnetic properties of amorphous rare-earth alloys. University of Southampton, Doctoral Thesis.
Abstract
The magnetic properties of three amorphous rare-earth alloy systems have been studied in some detail. The first measurements were made on the binary system GdxAg100-x with 28 ≤x ≤ 40. These alloys are ferromagnetic for x ≥ 28. In order to study the evolution of magnetic order as a function of Gd content it was necessary to go to a ternary alloy in which the glass forming properties are independent of the Gd content. The alloy system GdxY63-xCu37 was found to satisfy these requirements. These alloys are ferromagnetic for x ≥ 45 and show spin glass behaviour for x < 30. In the composition range 30 < x < 45 the nature of the ordered phase is not clear and the possibility of a mixture of two phases cannot be excluded. Finally inelastic neutron scattering was used to search for crystal field levels in amorphous R_5Y_58Cu_37 alloys in which R = Ce,Pr,Tb,Dy,Ho and Er. One of these, Er_5Y_58Cu_37, showed evidence of well defined crystal field levels despite the structural disorder. The results are discussed within the non-axial crystal field model. (D71906/87)
