Synthetic studies towards pentalenolactone E and some general synthetic memethods
The development of new synthetic methods in organic chemistry is of importance because new routes to total syntheses can thereby be achieved. Part one deals with some aspects of palladium, Sulphur and Furan chemistry. In part two, three attempted total synthesis of the sesquiterpene, antibiotic, antitumor agent pentolenolactone E are described. The planned synthesis, in Chapter three, involved an intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction as the key step. Chapter four, described an alternative approach via an intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction, followed by an intramolecular SN2 displacement. Chapter five, involved a Diels-Alder reaction, followed by a vinyl radical cyclisation as the key step. (D72239/87)
