Travelling people in the United Kingdom : in the first half of the twentieth century
Travelling people in the United Kingdom : in the first half of the twentieth century
Families of travellers have all long been widely referred to as `gypsies' by the settled population; this history sets out to test the validity of the popular conception. The groups studied are gypsies, showmen (of the circus and fairground) and canal boatmen. The origins of all three are examined but particular emphasis is placed upon cultural practices and values, aspects previously unrecorded for showmen and canal boatmen. Oral history has been employed where appropriate; hence this work's concentration upon the years c1900 - 1950. (DX86453)
