The Jason theme in classical literature

The Jason theme in classical literature
The Jason theme in classical literature

The story of Jason the Argonaut is one of the best known of Greek Myths, but the figure of Jason himself has generally been neglected. It is the concern of this thesis to trace the literary development of his character. The interpretation of Jason's character throughout the Classical Period is examined, with particular emphasis on the purposes to which the various authors put the figure of Jason. The works examined include not only the completely extant versions of the story, but also the fragmentary evidence. The reasons for the wide range of interpretations suffered by Jason are also discussed, together with the relative lack of material on him and his eventual overshadowing by Medea. This study is concerned primarily with the figure of Jason in Literature. As such, other factors and figures are ignored, except where they have a direct bearing on Jason himself.

Abstract

The story of Jason the Argonaut is one of the best known of Greek Myths, but the figure of Jason himself has generally been neglected.
