The study of the Soviet conception of the leading role of the communist party as a fundamental condition for the development of the Soviet political system requires investigation of the philosophical roots of Soviet ideology. The Marxist-Leninist conception of the communist party and the state in socialist society is a consistent body of thought, bound up with the dialectical materialist position on the interrelation between matter and consciousness. While in important respects the principles governing this conception were violated under Stalin's leadership, they continued to serve as a more or less reliable guide to the CPSU's view of the Party's leading role.
