Simulation model for evaluating schemes for an early detection of breast cancer
Simulation model for evaluating schemes for an early detection of breast cancer
Breast cancer is one of the major unsolved medical problems and a solution of this problem will lead to the prevention of breast cancer. At present the battle against breast cancer is through improved treatments and early detection. The case for an early detection of breast cancer through screening has been established from studies conducted in many countries. The practical use of these findings requires an efficient screening policy at regional and national levels. The modelling approach of Operational Research is well suited for the complex problem of evaluating a breast cancer screening policy. This research work describes the development of a simulation model in which growth of breast cancer, screening tests, various options for scheduling screening tests, selective or general screening policy, state of the cancer at detection, survival estimates and screening costs are considered. The model is implemented on a microcomputer with ease of use particularly in mind.
