Studies in the mixed-mode analysis of partially prismatic thin-walled structures
The mixed-mode method is a recently proposed combined finite strip/finite element method for the analysis of prismatic structures containing non-prismatic sub-structures. Walker (1) has examined the applicability of this method for the static and dynamic analysis of straight structures. This thesis considers the further investigation of the mixed-mode method for structural analysis, for the static and dynamic analysis of horizontally curved partially prismatic structures, and for the buckling analysis of straight structures. The thesis is therefore divided into two parts. Part 1 deals with curved structures in Chapters 2, 3 and 4. The mixed-mode theory for static and dynamic analysis is presented in Chapter 2, with three types of sub-structures considered; spring supports, radially located transverse sub-structures, and oblique transverse sub-structures. Chapter 3 and 4 are allocated to the static and dynamic examples respectively, where the method is illustrated with examples ranging from slabs with cross beams to a three span trapezoidal box girder. Part 2 deals with the buckling analysis of straight structures. The mixed-mode theory for this case is presented in Chapter 5, with transverse sub-structures considered for this analysis. The method is illustrated with three types of examples in Chapter 6; the local buckling of columns, the local buckling of beams and the buckling of the diaphragms. (DX87374)
