The structure and tectonics of the Bude formation, north Cornwall, SW England

The Bude Formation which crops out along a coastal section in north Cornwall represents a folded turbidite sequence with complex fault geometries and exhibits aspects of syn-sedimentary tectonism. The main phase folds were generated by flexural-slip folding. A re-examination of this classic coastline shows that the deformation history was more complex than previously thought. The earliest phase of deformation in the Bude Formation may have occurred while the sediments were unlithified. This deformation was the product of the beginning of the Variscan thrusting. The majority of structures in the Bude Formation are demonstrably the result of tectonic ('hard rock') deformation. The earliest tectonic structures are the NE trending contractional faults and associated similarly oriented extensional faults. These two forms of structures are dated as pre-dating the folding of the Bude Formation. F1 folds are upward facing with curvilinear and sub-horizontal axial traces (E-W trending) with or without an associated axial planar cleavage. Statistical analysis of bedding data shows that the folds in the Bude Formation are circular conical to pseudocylindrical in geometry. A model for the structural evolution of the Bude Formation is developed. The model suggests that the deformation of the Bude Formation is a result of dextral transpression.
