Representations of architecture on Attic vases

Representations of architecture on Attic vases
Representations of architecture on Attic vases

This thesis seeks to examine the different types of buildings that are represented on Attic black-figure and early red-figure vases, the various ways these buildings are represented and the subjects in which they are to be found. To do this I examine the representations of each painter separately, giving a detailed description of each building, followed by a review of the most important architectural subjects. It becomes apparent that certain painters are more interested in architecture than others, irrespective of ability. The more skilful of painters show the larger and more complicated buildings, particularly fountains, while the careless ones are content with simple columns. The emphasis is on decoration rather than realism, and since only elements of buildings are shown, often from different viewpoints, it is not surprising that the painted representations tell us less about real architecture than about the intentions and preferences of the painters. Abstract
