The application of the systematic mapping of geomorphology for groundwater assessment in Wadi Al-Khanagah, Central Saudi Arabia

The evaluation of groundwater is important for water resource development and management in the agricultural regions in the Eastern Arabian Shield, because rechargeable shallow groundwater of alluvium and weathered bedrock aquifers is the only reliable water source in this Shield area. Since there is virtually no data on surface conditions or groundwater hydrology in this area, the main aim of this study was to adapt a hydroge-omorphological model (based on mapping techniques in geomorphology) for rapid evaluation of groundwater in these wadis.

Three complementary geomorphological techniques, including geomor-phological mapping, land-system mapping, and morphometric mapping, have been applied on Wadi Al-Khanagah basin to present the influencing factors.

The recorded information about the physical characteristics together with the available climatic data, have been analysed for indications of potential groundwater conditions.

Encouraging results have been obtained. Aquifer type and size may be identified, and groundwater recharge can be quantified. Also, water-table depth may be predicted with some confidence, and groundwater quantity and quality determined. (D82550)
