Industrial wastewater as a resource for irrigation in Kuwait
Industrial wastewater as a resource for irrigation in Kuwait
The problem of fresh water scarcity in Kuwait is one of the most important national problems which requires great efforts to be solved. Among such efforts is this study which aims to investigate thoroughly the possibility of reuse of the industrial wastewater for irrigation purposes. The two main aspects of special concern are the quality and quantity of such new sources. The quality aspect was investigated and tested by Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) in 1983. Their findings recommended the suitability of reusing this resource in irrigation as have been proved through experimental studies. The quantity, reliability and economics are the core of this work in order to justify the recommended alternative use (irrigation). The methodology used recognized the multidisciplinary nature of the problem and hence tackled it by two approaches; (a) the characterization of the industrial wastewater using standard statistical analysis tools, and (b) the futures studies to explore the different environmental effects surrounding the issue. The Delphi and Cross-Impact techniques were the building blocks to develop the model used for scenario generation. The cost element of the irrigation water was the backbone to develop irrigation projects. The unit cost of the treated industrial wastewater is calculated at different capacities and discount rates and compared with other sources of water in Kuwait, and proved to be competitive.
