The development of a cereal aphid advisory model and an oilseed rape pest advisory model
The development of a cereal aphid advisory model and an oilseed rape pest advisory model
The cereal aphids Sitobion avenae and Metopolophium dirhodum can cause considerable damage in winter wheat during the summer. Similarly, the oilseed rape pests Meligethes spp., Ceutorhynchus assimilis and Dasineura brassicae can cause considerable damage in winter oilseed rape during the summer. Two interactive computer-based advisory models have been developed to aid farmers in their spray decision making for these two groups of pests.
The models were developed from relationships between crop and pest development and the damage caused by the pests using data obtained from published information. Using information on the economics of control, the size of the pest populations and the values and growth stage of the crop, the models are able to predict whether or not a spray application is necessary.
In order to validate the models, field trials were carried out between 1985 and 1988
