Extinction cross-section of simulated rain drops measured in an X-band open resonator

Extinction cross-section of simulated rain drops measured in an X-band open resonator
Extinction cross-section of simulated rain drops measured in an X-band open resonator

An X-band open resonator has been employed in an investigation of e.m. wave scattering by simulated rain drops. Methods of plotting the e.m. field distribution within the resonator have been improved, a procedure has been proposed for optimising the resonator coupling, whilst maintaining the purity of the resonant mode. The theoretical solution for lossy spherical scatterers has been verified experimentally, an approximate solution for ellipsoidal scatterers has also been checked and its range of applicability determined. The open resonator has been established as a versatile and accurate instrument for measuring extinction cross-section of symmetrical lossy scatterers. A technique has been developed for continuous measurement of extinction cross-section of vibrating water drops. It has been shown that a water drop supported on nylon filaments behaves just like a freely falling rain drop. Using this technique, assemblies of simulated rain drops can be produced and their effect on e.m. fields examined.
