Cureton, C.G (1979) The fluorescence of amines. University of Southampton, Doctoral Thesis.
Abstract
The fluorescence properties of the three simple tertiaryamines, trimethylamine, triethylamine and tri-n-propylamifie,'have been investigated in the vapour phase with particular reference to the effect of varying the excitation energy. An interpretation of the results is presented which accounts for the-emission properties observed both here and in previous work. Efficient quenching of amine fluorescence by fluorocarbons and chlorocarbons is reported in both vapour phase and solution phase. The quenching rate-constant si are rationalized by assuming that quenching proceeds through formation of an exciplex which is stabilized by charge-transfer from amine to quencher. For comparison, experiments on a number of substituted benzenes arq described and relate to those obtained for the amines. Some preliminary measurements made on other nitrogen containing molecules are also reported.
