Tube electrodes
Tube electrodes
A general review is presented of the formulation of electrode reactions under diffusive and convective mass transfer control, at, different electrode geometries. Special attention is given to two systems, namely the rotating disc electrode (RDE) and the tube electrode (TE). The essential hydrodynamic theory of both is presented and consideration is given to the difficulties associated with the performance of these systems when a ring or rings are inserted. The hydrodynamic performance of the flow systems was established using well understood electrochemical reactions, such as the reduction of copper onto a copper tube, and the oxidation-reduction of the system Fe(CN)6-/Fe(CN)6- at platinum or vitreous carbon tube electrodes. Applications of the system to kinetics studies are described, some of the work being first carried out using a rotating disc electrode and than later using the tube electrode. The deposition of mercury onto vitreous carbon under flowing conditions was also studied. Some aspects of the theories of these studies are examined by the mathematical modelling of electrode processes under steady flowing conditions, using iI the methods of computer simulation. The last chapter describes a preliminary study of the oxidation of formic acid under stationary and rotating conditions.
