Pemble, Martyn Ernest (1981) Raman spectroscopy from electrode surfaces. University of Southampton, Doctoral Thesis.
Abstract
The application of the technique of Raman spectroscopy to the study of electrode surfaces is described. The development of the technique is discussed in the context of the observation of anomalous. scattering intensities from species adsorbed at silver, copper and gold electrode surfaces. Spectra resulting from the adsorption of halide ions, water, pyridine and piperidine molecules at a silver electrode a represented. A surface phase formed at a silver electrode in CNmedia is assigned to an Ag(CN)2 unit with C2 site symmetry. A similar species involving SCN-ions is shown to be formed at a silver electrode in spite of competitive. adsorption of Cl- Ions. Mechanisms proposed to account for the anomalous scattering intensities from adsorbates at silver, copper and gold surfaces are discussed. A generalised model for the surface scattering mechanism is constructed, and discussed in terms of the predicted form of the experimental parameters.
