The influence of parenting upon children's socio-emotional functioning : clinical implications of current theory and research findings
The influence of parenting upon children's socio-emotional functioning : clinical implications of current theory and research findings
A review of the literature is carried out, exploring the impact of parenting on children's socio-emotional development. This exploration is undertaken to provide clues as to how therapists might best address child psychopathology where parenting practices are implicated in the aetiology. The paper begins by identifying various styles of parenting and their influence on children's socio-emotional development. Next, theoretical explanations for the parent-child-behaviour relationship are outlined. Socialisation theories, the operant parenting model and attachment theory are all discussed. Methodological problems with the literature and shortfalls with the models are considered. Finally, thought is given to the implications of findings within the literature for clinicians and researchers.
