Stimpson, Michael (1998) Composition. University of Southampton, Doctoral Thesis.
Abstract
This portfolio of composition contains works for solo instrument, small ensemble, and orchestra, both full and chamber. The pieces for guitar reflect an initial period of transition which is taken further by three works, for piano trio, chamber group, and the violin and piano. The gradually forming style is consolidated in a concerto for oboe. Like the guitar, the oboe has an inherent lyricism to be dealt with, and its treatment in part reflects the issues facing classical music as the twentieth century draws to a close.
This search for 'accessibility without compromise' culminates in a setting of the text of Gulliver's Travels (Jonathan Swift) for baritone and chamber orchestra. The scoring for different combinations of instruments, together with the interweaving of the different voyages of Gulliver, enable many aspects of Swift's text to be explored in a contemporary setting.
