Hellberg, Stephen Andrew (2004) Advanced computational programming support environments. University of Southampton, Doctoral Thesis.
Abstract
The construction of supercomputers assembled from scalable massively-parallel computer hardware became technically practical during the 1990s, yet the supercomputer industry lacked the software skills to effectively design and program highly concurrent software. Amongst the difficulties was a lack of software development tools suitable for complex, highly-parallel environments.
This thesis studies the research undertaken by parallel computer manufacturers, academia and scientific end-user organisations to create a supportive development environment in which to produce highly-parallel software, portable across the leading platforms. The research undertaken in a major European project to develop industrial-strength tooling, adopt leading software engineering environment technology, and address the interests of scientific computing concerning the future supercomputing architectures forms a significant element of the thesis. The findings of the project are reported and described in the context of competitive technologies of the period. The analysis presented also considers adoption of the technology by the community represented and draws conclusions for the future of parallel computing and supercomputing.
