Assessment and remediation of old railway embankments for the next 175 years

Assessment and remediation of old railway embankments for the next 175 years
Assessment and remediation of old railway embankments for the next 175 years
Historic railway embankments are complex structures that are subjected to cycles of both train and environmental loading. Detailed assessments of these structures are required to better understand how the constituent fill materials respond to long-term loading conditions, thus ensuring continued performance of the earthwork and train operations. This paper considers the variability in the engineering strength and stiffness of Lias Clay embankment fill and its cyclic behaviour including a threshold stress. The laboratory results are found to be reproduced well by an advanced constitutive model. The model can be used with appropriate representation of external cyclic loading, i.e. train loading and seasonal changes, to understand the long-term performance of both the earthworks and potential remedial solutions.
