What is a diffractive digital image?
What is a diffractive digital image?
Digital Images are produced through the detection and manipulation of light, so it seems appropriate to discuss digital images through a term derived from the physics of optics. In this chapter we explore the different meanings of diffraction which derive from the study of the interference patterns which occur when light bends around an object. The chapter then explores what a diffractive methodology might be and how it might be a useful process in making visible difference thus becoming a useful tool to counter a homogenisation that occurs within the digital humanities.

Abstract

Digital Images are produced through the detection and manipulation of light, so it seems appropriate to discuss digital images through a term derived from the physics of optics. In this chapter we explore the different meanings of diffraction which derive from the study of the interference patterns which occur when light bends around an object. The chapter then explores what a diffractive methodology might be and how it might be a useful process in making visible difference thus becoming a useful tool to counter a homogenisation that occurs within the digital humanities.
