The modelling of wave-current velocity profiles in the offshore design process.
The modelling of wave-current velocity profiles in the offshore design process.
Chapter 20 examines the way in which waves and currents have been treated in the design of offshore structures. Considers nonlinear wave kinematics, treatment of current profiles up to the still water level and extension of the current profile up to the instantaneous sea surface. Discusses treatment of the superposition of the wave and current flows. Compares the Stokes expansion theories of Skjelbria & Hendrickson and Fenton, and notes results of convergence tests. Studies Fenton's solution to the case of nonlinear waves on a uniform current. For nonlinear waves on a shear current a third order version of bilinear wave/current thoery is proposed. Compares methods for extending the current profile. Explains how to interpret instrumental measurements of currents in the wave zone, and indicates where problems occur.
