On the active absorption of sound

On the active absorption of sound
On the active absorption of sound

The maximum sound power that can be absorbed from an incident plane wave by a point monopole source is equivalent to that provided by a perfectly absorbing circular area of one wavelength in circumference. A point dipole source and a longitudinal point quadrupole source, whose axes are in the direction of travel of the wave, can absorb three and five times this power, respectively. Thus the strengths of two equal and opposite forces increase in inverse proportion to their separation distance such that the combination of the forces reduces to that of the longitudinal quadrupole.

Abstract

The maximum sound power that can be absorbed from an incident plane wave by a point monopole source is equivalent to that provided by a perfectly absorbing circular area of one wavelength in circumference. A point dipole source and a longitudinal point quadrupole source, whose axes are in the direction of travel of the wave, can absorb three and five times this power, respectively. Thus the strengths of two equal and opposite forces increase in inverse proportion to their separation distance such that the combination of the forces reduces to that of the longitudinal quadrupole.
