Abstract

This chapter offers conceptual considerations around the theme of attitude research in the ELF field of enquiry. We question the extent to which holders of attitudes can be grouped (in the ways that attitude research often groups people), whether the objects to which people might hold an attitude are accessible or stable enough for empirical treatment (in the ways that attitude research often elicits and treats data), and whether traditional attitude research creates barriers to contexts which obscure potential insights of fluid and situational phenomena, such as language and culture in ELF scenarios.
