Abstract
The WHO/UNDP (United Nations Development Programme)/World Bank
Scflistosoma Genome Network (SGN) arose from the realization that a co-ordinated international effort could rapidly and efficiently provide powerful new methods and resources for identifying genes of immunological, pharma-
coiogical and diagnostic significance, a potential that had been clearly demon
strated by initial studies reported at the Schistosomiasis Meeting in Rio de
Janeiro in December 1993. Thus, in Aprll 1994, WHO convened a work-
shop to review existing knowledge of the 5chistosoma genome and determin~
the most effe~ive means of analysis. The SGN is co-ordinated by Metre
Strand (John Hopkins University, USA) and is open to any laboratory inter-
esteo in generating genome data for Scfiistosoma.
