Risk assessment of coastal defences

Risk assessment of coastal defences
Risk assessment of coastal defences

In order to provide an introduction to the use of probabilistic design techniques, a simple case of seawall overtopping is used to illustrate and to compare a number of available methods. The results are compared with the results obtained using conventional deterministic design methods and an analysis based on 'real' data. This serves to highlight the variability between the different techniques and the need for a more detailed appreciation of probabilistic methods.

Abstract

In order to provide an introduction to the use of probabilistic design techniques, a simple case of seawall overtopping is used to illustrate and to compare a number of available methods. The results are compared with the results obtained using conventional deterministic design methods and an analysis based on 'real' data. This serves to highlight the variability between the different techniques and the need for a more detailed appreciation of probabilistic methods.
