Beach nourishment and socio-economic aspects

Beach nourishment and socio-economic aspects
Beach nourishment and socio-economic aspects

Any works on the coast require consideration of the socio-economic impacts and this is particularly so when considering beach nourishment schemes. Two case studies are described which illustrate the validity and the limitations of economic appraisal with respect to beach nourishment schemes. The use of "extended" economic appraisal, probabilistic design methods and decision analysis are discussed as options for refining the appraisal to both justify the scheme and select the most appropriate alternative.

Abstract

Any works on the coast require consideration of the socio-economic impacts and this is particularly so when considering beach nourishment schemes. Two case studies are described which illustrate the validity and the limitations of economic appraisal with respect to beach nourishment schemes. The use of "extended" economic appraisal, probabilistic design methods and decision analysis are discussed as options for refining the appraisal to both justify the scheme and select the most appropriate alternative.
