What is it like to learn EAP during a pandemic? The views and experiences of pre-sessional students’ during Emergency Remote Teaching
The COVID-19 pandemic caused many traditionally taught courses to quickly move their delivery online and this situation has allowed many educators and learners to experience some level of online learning for the first time. Before the pandemic, English for Academic Purposes (EAP) pre-sessional programmes were exclusively taught in-person and students had to travel internationally to attend the classes. In the years of 2020 and 2021, however, these courses were mostly delivered online in the UK for students around the world. This presentation will focus on one pre-sessional programme at a British university that was run online in the summer of 2020 and will present data on the learners’ access to electronic devices and the internet, their previous online learning experiences, familiarity with online language learning resources, and views and experiences with Emergency Remote Education (ERE) in the context of an online pre-sessional programme. To explore these, students completed an online questionnaire with open and closed questions about themselves and their online learning experiences. Initial results reveal some potential technological challenges and varied online learning experiences. Data also suggest that students valued the convenience, flexibility, learner-centeredness, and the time and money-saving opportunities provided by online education in the pre-sessional context but had concerns over the suitability of their internet access for online education, communication, online pedagogy, and developing their speaking skills.
