This chapter focuses only on those treatment approaches demonstrated to have been effective in treatment studies in randomised controlled trials (RCTs), where the therapy is compared with another effective treatment (e.g. medication) and/or with a control condition (e.g. placebo or waiting list control). This chapter considers both treatments for acute depression and more recent developments designed to prevent relapse and recurrence of depression.
