Learning of student-teachers in initial teacher education programs in Korea
Learning of student-teachers in initial teacher education programs in Korea
Initial teacher education (ITE) in Korea, which is considered a success case among the OECD countries, is regulated by the law and tightly controlled by the government. Persons who are interested to become a teacher need to obtain at least a bachelor’s degree at an accredited program and a teaching certificate, as a prerequisite for taking the highly competitive annual recruitment test. The ITE institutes undergo a regular, high-stake appraisal, which determines the quota for student recruitment or even license renewal and their continuation of operation. This entry discusses the curricular content of the ITE programs for basic education, and the ITE institute appraisal program. It also discusses current issues, including sustainability of the ITE programs and curricular-related issues, e.g., practicality of the ITE and incorporating social and technological advancement.
