The use of the same pop song in different dramatic films.
Driven by the development of the film industry and the demands of film markets, as a mainstream type of soundtrack, the pop film music began to take on more tasks in dramatic film. An increasing number of English language pop songs have been used in non-English /East-Asian films. This phenomenon is not rare as English is the most widely used language in the world today, meanwhile the export of European and American culture has long been powerful. My research largely focuses on exploring the cooperation and relationship between films and pop songs, especially when the films and songs come from different cultural contexts. I am going to investigate the “content” of English pop songs, and examine how are they used in Eastern films and whether they will carry meaning in the films. Globalisation is one of the contexts and premises for the emergence of this phenomenon. Although this thesis is highly containing of these, it does not aim to focus on global culture, history, or society; while breaking down the film text, the analysis of the meaning of pop songs will incorporate references not only from film theory, but also from the cultural perspective.
