Abstract
Review of : Classroom Communication and Diversity. by Robert G. Powell, and Dana Caseau, published by Mahwah, NJ: Erlbaum, 2004. xiii + 238 pp. ISBN 0–8058–4025–7.This practical book aims ‘to provide a useful framework for helping new and experienced teachers manage the communication challenges of today’s classroom’ (p. vii). This it does in a coherent and didactic way. The main problems of today’s classrooms center around diversity, understood in a broad sense as: (i) the ethnic composition of a classroom, (ii) the expectations regarding gender within school, and (iii) the inclusion of students with learning disabilities. Thus classrooms are heterogeneous, characterized by students with different styles of communication and learning.
