README file for “Dataset and Model Library for Designing a Better Internet of Things, Privacy and Compliance by Design as SysML Domain Extension for Consumer Smart Electronics" README Author: Robert Henry Thorburn, University of Southampton This dataset supports the PhD thesis: “Designing a Better Internet of Things, Privacy and Compliance by Design as SysML Domain Extension for Consumer Smart Electronics" Contents ----------------------- 2018_Caps.zip: Dataset The file 2018_Caps.zip, contains a number of network packet capture files in the standard .pcap format (a program such as Wireshark is needed to read them: https://www.wireshark.org/). The files starting with the filename “dump”, contain raw (not edited or manipulated) packet captures recorded in blocks of six hours each on a bespoke test bed. Dataset used and described in the PhD thesis: Designing a Better Internet of Things, Privacy and Compliance by Design as SysML Domain Extension for Consumer Smart Electronics (please see chapters two and four of the thesis). The additional .pcap file labelled as “Supercap” is simply all the files combined for ease of analysis. Clarification: the .pcap files are blocks of six hours, but the testbed was not run continuously. No personal data was used on this test bed. Only synthetic data was used specifically to avoid any issues relating to personal data and to make this dataset available via CC BY. DISCREETV1.2.zip: Model Library The file DISCREETV1.2.zip, contains the DISCREET (DomaIn extenSion for Compliance and pRivacy by dEsign in consumEr ioT) model library in both XMI and EAPX formats. Instructions on the appropriate software and author contact contained in a README file. DISCREET is introduced in chapter seven of the PhD thesis and applied to a case study in chapter eight. To use DISCREET in EAPX a copy of Sparx Enterprise Architect is needed (https://sparxsystems.com/products/ea/downloads.html). Alternatively, the XMI version can be imported into any other SysML tool that supports SysML 1.5 or above. General ----------------------- All data collected on a bespoke test bed and using exclusively synthetic data. Date of data collection Aug 2018 – Sept 2018 Dataset available under CC BY Publisher: University of Southampton, U.K. Date: November 2022
