Validation of the multidimensional driving style inventory in the UK and comparison to international multidimensional driving style inventory findings
Validation of the multidimensional driving style inventory in the UK and comparison to international multidimensional driving style inventory findings
A person’s driving style is indicative of the driving behaviours that they habitually perform and allows researchers to represent the heterogeneity of drivers in a population and the consistency of actions within an individual when investigating under-researched driver behaviours. To investigate whether a person’s driving style is a predictor of a behaviour being investigated, researchers require a reliable measure of a person’s driving style. One of the most used tools, since its construction in 2004, to identify a participant’s driving style is the Multidimensional Driving Style Inventory. However, despite its widespread use the Multidimensional Driving Style Inventory has never been formally validated in a UK setting. As such, this paper seeks to rectify the lack of validation of the Multidimensional Driving Style Inventory in the UK by conducting an exploratory factor analysis using data collected from UK driving licence holders, contrasting these results against international findings. The validation of the Multidimensional Driving Style Inventory, therefore, provides confidence for future UK-based studies that the measure is both a reliable and versatile measure of driving style in the UK.
