Esophageal disease continues to be a major clinical problem attracting ever-increasing research activity. It is consequently difficult for those interested in this field to keep up to date with developments. This literature review attempts to provide a comprehensive overview of recent publications concerning benign esophageal disease and related conditions. Articles, editorials and case reports published predominantly in the English language and listed in Index Medicus/Medline/BIDS as appearing between January 1998 and December 1998 have been included. Articles published in this journal have been excluded.
