Introduction
This chapter introduces the themes of the Dandy Style book, beginning with a brief history of dandies, dandyism and Beau Brummell. It considers how men began to address fashionability in the late nineteenth century, considering links with romanticism and concepts of modernity. It addresses J.C. Flugel's notion of 'masculine renunciation' as men moved towards a sombre dressed appearance in the early 19th century and subsequent challenges to this trope, particularly in the late 20 and early 21st centuries. It also introduces the themes of the exhibition at Manchester Art Gallery to which the book was linked.
