Casual Subversion
This Chapter explores the casual styles that developed in menswear from the early nineteenth century as an alternative to the smart, seemingly ubiquitous suit. It examines relaxed forms of dressing at home, the rise of sports clothing and its adoption broadly as leisure wear. It considers the place of certain subcultural garments deriving from a sporting tradition and the influence of key individuals on contemporary casual male wardrobe.
