Belarusian-Jewish studies: state of the art and perspectives
Belarusian-Jewish studies: state of the art and perspectives
This article takes the opportunity of the June 2021 conference on ‘The history, culture and heritage of Jews in Belarus across the age’ to explore the past, present and future of Belarusian-Jewish scholarship. It offers an overview of how Belarusian-Jewish history and culture were approached by 19th century Russian-Jewish historians, Soviet scholars, ‘Western’ historians and Belarusian-Jewish professional and lay historians after 1991. Although marginal in the Dubnovian historiography and considered a part of the Russian Jewry by his followers, Belarusian-Jewish history has now become a legitimate object of study in Belarus and internationally. The 2021 conference has demonstrated a broad scientific and public interest in heritage, literature and history, although some periods and topics still need further research.
