Bored at School: The everyday experiences of upper-secondary students in disadvantaged urban schools in Mexico
Bored at School: The everyday experiences of upper-secondary students in disadvantaged urban schools in Mexico
The purpose of this paper is to present preliminary findings on an ongoing research project looking at the feelings and experiences of school-membership amongst urban poor adolescents in Mexico. Upper-secondary is the school level with the highest rate of dropouts in Mexico. Unlike previous research highlighting the economic factors for the disengagement of poor upper-secondary students, our focus is on students’ involvement, experiences and feelings of their academic activities. This paper focuses on students’ everyday social experiences at school. We explore the meanings that students from popular sectors attach to school attendance and the ways in which schooling is incorporated into their everyday life.
