Artists in Residence project - Penrhyn Castle 2015-17

Artists in Residence project - Penrhyn Castle 2015-17
Artists in Residence project - Penrhyn Castle 2015-17
Between 2014-17 I was involved in a pilot commissioning project in North Wales, as Consultant Curator for the Arts Council of Wales/National Trust Artists’ Residencies at NT Penrhyn Castle.
Seven artists led on projects which expanded in scale and ambition over the three years of residencies.
The project entailed developing appropriate briefs in liaison with a non-gallery venue; of a finely-tuned selection of artists using different approaches at different phases of the project to match a developing need; of building partnerships with individuals and organisations to support the ambitions of the venue and of artists; of building strategies for developing new audiences for what has been deemed a ‘challenging’ venue. Furthermore, the volunteer workforce was the specific target as participants in the first phase, and volunteers from within and outside the property were enlisted to shape and deliver all the outcomes of the project. The nature of the work at Penrhyn has fully embraced co-creation and participation, involving the voices, performance and construction skills of the audience as an integral part of the outcomes over the three-year project. I believe that the value of introducing artists’ practice to properties can offer broader cultural and developmental outcomes as well as the expected material ones.
