Heritage, escapism and anxiety. Visits to Corfe Castle during the Covid-19 pandemic
Heritage, escapism and anxiety. Visits to Corfe Castle during the Covid-19 pandemic
n this chapter I examine the role of escapism in visits to Corfe Castle, England, before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Corfe Castle has been a visitor attraction for almost three centuries, establishing it as a place of escapism in the popular imagination. Whilst it is not possible to directly compare responses of visitors during the COVID-19 pandemic with those of visitors before it, the long history of tourism at Corfe Castle offers some insights into potential continuity and change in perceptions and visitor experiences as a result of the encounter with COVID-19.
