Queer(ing) fashion connections: fashion, dress, textiles, genders and queer identities

Queer(ing) fashion connections: fashion, dress, textiles, genders and queer identities
Queer(ing) fashion connections: fashion, dress, textiles, genders and queer identities
This chapter situates a selection of fashion and textiles garments featured in the ‘Queer’ exhibition at National Gallery of Victoria within particular queer contexts. The intersection of gender and sexuality that has sometimes been queered by the juxtaposition of design elements within fashion or the social or cultural context in which garments have been worn is addressed through the chapter, particularly where the ‘queerly inflected’ lives and practices of the designers included in the chapter have resonated within their fashion designs. The chapter identifies the ways in which camp has been used a queer strategy in undermining gender and sexual definitions and binaries and how queer theory can be applied to an understanding of the relationship between bodies and clothing in the work of a selection of designers. In particular the chapter addresses a particular collective group of Australian designers and artists working in the 1970s employ craft techniques, processes and techniques that are mirrored by more contemporary Australian and international artists and designers. It also considers fashion and textiles designed by both Australian and international designers that are associated with queer icons or can be read as queering design aesthetics and taste.
